C-IED COE supports MINUSMA – C-IED Awareness Course (CIAC) January 2015.

Following a request of UNMAS to improve the C-IED knowledge of deployed UN-Forces, a Mobile Advisory Team (MAT) of the C-IED COE deployed to Bamako (Mali) 20 – 29 January 2015 to provide two iterations of the C- IED Awareness course (CIAC) to MINUSMA.

The CIAC is a C-IED Awareness course especially designed to meet the training and deployment requirements for approved NATO partners and non-NATO country members of governmental and non-governmental organizations and familiarizes Staff Officers, Senior Non-Commissioned Officers and civilian equivalent assigned to Operational Level Headquarters with an overview of the IED weapon system, C-IED enablers and approaches to counter IED activities.

The lectures and knowledge provided during this course are based on non-classified information out of NATO documents. Also UN and other open sources were used for it. Therefore, no security clearance is required to attend the course.

The aim of these particular courses is to provide UN operational level HQ staff with an awareness of Counter IED strategies and supporting activities that may be integrated into existing operational planning and structures.

The two iterations – 20 - 22 and 27 - 29 January 2015 - were attended by 50 students from MINUSMA HQ, UNPOL Mali, UNDSS. These military, police and civilian personnel were from various MINUSMA contributing European, American, Asian and mostly African nations (Germany, Sweden, Estonia, Romania, USA, Canada, Lebanon, Togo, Burkina Faso, Ghana, RD Congo, Tunisia, Egypt and others).
