The NATO Lessons Learned Conference 2024 (NLLC24) was taken place in Lisbon on 16 and 17 April, with a pre-conference day on 15 April and a post-conference day on 18 April.
The JALLC's Commander, Commodore Fernando Artilheiro, welcomed participants marking the Alliance's 75th Anniversary and highlighting the importance of the theme of the conference: The NATO Lessons Learned (LL) Capability in support of NATO 2030.
The conference was then opened by Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, General Christian Badia, via hologram. The General who highlighted the importance of Lessons, especially in the context of Russia War against Ukraine. The opening remarks were followed by updates on Lessons Learned and on NATO's 2030 efforts as well as a moment for Australia to shine in the NLLC24 spotlight. As a long-standing partner of the Alliance, Lieutenant Colonel Kohn Edwards—of the Joint Lessons Assessment Directorate at HQ Joint Operational Command of the Australian Defence Force—who presented the Australian perspective to Lessons Learned.
The second day of the NLLC24 was another packed day, with presentations from the two panels as well as live interactions via hologram and a presentation and Q&A session with the Deputy Minister of Defence of Ukraine via a live video connection from Ukraine.
The pre-conference day on 15 April started with an update of the NATO Lessons Learned Portal's current status and its future successor the NATO Lessons Learned Toolset. Day continued with presentations on national experience using new Lessons Learned Tools from the US and from NATO Partner: Ukraine. In the breaks, participants could get a first taste of the informative industry stands taking part in the conference which include demonstrations in augmented reality, hologram technology, and robotics.
The post-conference day was set aside for specific communities of interest to get together and discuss and decide on topics relevant to their community. The JALLC hosted a round table for the high ranking military officers at the NLLC24 where they discussed Lessons Learned at the higher military levels. There were also meetings discussing Lessons Learned related topics for the Land Domain Community, the Centres of Excellence, National Leadership, NATO's Executive Development Programme, and a meeting for the Lessons Learned Functional Review and Exercises, Training, Exercises and Evaluation Global Programming Cycle. Each meeting had their own agenda which saw representatives from the respective communities and/or nations receive briefings, discuss challenges, and look for ways ahead in their respective areas.
